Informative!!
This is a wonderful book for teens. I work with teens and provided a copy of this book to all - they loved it!! It answers the questions that they want to know the answers to - but not sure how to ask. It answers questions that they have had, have and will have. It covers everything teens care about from A-Z. A wonderful resource. If you have a teen, work with teens, or just know a teen, consider this as a gift. This book is a wonderful contribution to the great books by and for African-Americans.

Absolutely fabulous!!
The African-American population has been awaiting this book for a long time! What better way to help keep your teenager safe and informed, especially when you're not around! This magnificent book covers everything, from setting your alarm at night to good grooming and shopping tips. It is well written, clear, concise and easy to read. Each chapter has its own personality and flavor. Your teenager can look up individual subjects or read it like a novel. It promises to give information persuasively, while gently guiding your child in the right direction. I highly recommend this book for all pre-teens, teens and young adults!

After I Said No
Published in Paperback by Daniel & Daniel Pub (March, 2000)
Author: Sheila Golburgh Johnson
Average review score:

The Gift of Golden Hands
After I Said No tells the story of 15-year-old Perele Sokolv, who leaves Russia for New York, alone, in 1905 to escape from anti-Semitism. She boards a ship for America where well-to-do relatives want to take her in and marry her to their son.

In Russia, Perele's family was well off, descendants of a master artisan who was said to have "golden hands." But in America she chooses poverty and grueling work rather than a comfortable life for the price of "pretending to be who I was not."

In addition to Perele's conflict, the book brings to life the little-known history of immigrant girls who worked in garment industry sweatshops, exploited and yet independent "free" women.

After I Said No is a story with a positive feminist message. It covers many topics that are not readlity available for teenagers to read about: reasons for immigration to the U.S. and what the experience was like, Russian anti-Semitism, Jewish discrimination against women, immigrant women as garment workers and their labor struggles, and the importance of maternity clothes for freeing women from the confines fo their boudoirs. I believe young people and adults will be glad I was to get to know Perele and her friends and to discover what life was life for working girls in New York not so long ago.

High Interest Historical Novel
This novel is a quick and interesting read. It gives accurate historical details of a wealthy young girl's trip from tsarist Russia, through Germany, over the seas to the United States. Details of fumigation, discrimination, humiliation, and hope create an enlightening picture of immigration in the early 1900's. The novel gives a description of family life and the expectations of girls arriving without family, betrothed to men they have not met. The reader is easily caught up in their hopes, their dreams and their disappointments.

A picture of humanity with its cruelties and kindnesses, mixed with the history of the labor movement and burgeoning industrialization, creates a picture interesting and appealing to those interested in the social and cultural history of our country.

This book is a must for all secondary school libraries because it makes our history come alive. It should be incorporated as part of the secondary school English curriculum as a book that presents good historical information and excellent values, in a well written, high interest-level story.

After The Storm
Published in Paperback by Zondervan (15 May, 1987)
Author: Margaret Johnson
Average review score:

Like Romance? You'll Love This One!
Best-selling author, Margaret Johnson, has spun a heartbreaking, heartwarming romantic saga in this affordable paperback you will most certainly want to add to your easy-reading library. "After the Storm" is not only an intriguing, confounding blend of lovable and not-so-lovable characters, but Johnson clearly distinguishes between upright and shady behaviours and motivations, and leaves the reader convinced that the price of "upright" is never too high. This is an exceedingly well-crafted, light & lively romance novel with a profound and sobering Christian message.

What a plot!
Thank you, Margaret, for sending me "After the Storm." What a suspenseful book! I appreciate the way you presented your MAIN subject without being stuffy or unrealistic.

Aim High: An Olympic Decathlete's Inspiring Story
Published in Audio Cassette by Zondervan (September, 1994)
Authors: Dave Johnson and Verne Becker
Average review score:

This is a very inspiring book
This is a book that you can often compare to times in your own spiritual life. I am 12 years old and got this book last Christmas. I have read the whole way through it lots of times, and it has never been any less exciting.

Inspired me and changed me!
When I read this book three years ago I never heard of a Decathlon and I never thought I'd be one. When my mom got me this book for me for the first time I was interested, and wanted to find out what this book was about. I was in track but I only ran the mid-distants runs. I do like to play around with different events and when I did I would do better then the best on the track team. So I began to compete in some events durning track meets just to find out that I was doing well in them. But my track coach would disapprove of trying too many events and not concentrating on my mid-distant runs. Well, I read this book and was introduced to the decathlon and I wanted to do it, and I did. I have competed in the decathlon for two years and have increase my score by 1000 points over that time and plan on doing even better next time. I am now training very hard for it and this time I'm going to be more ready then ever. This has done great things for me and Dave Johnson's life is so similar to mine. I was also a rebal in my early years and then I got a sign from God and was instantly changed. I would appreciate it if Dave Johnson's would read this. I want to think him for changing my life. -Aaron M. Mills

Published in Paperback by Chronicle Books (November, 1999)
Authors: Lynn Johnson and Michael O'Leary
Average review score:

An Excellent Book for both Train and Art Lovers.
This book covers railroad advertising from the early 1900s to the late 50s. All color art and a few B&W pictures showing the real trains that influenced the advertising. It shows examples of railroad advertising from posters, timetables, brochures and luggage tags as well as railroads in the US, Canada and Europe. There is a breif history introducing each chapter and the captions for each picture are descriptive and accurate. At the end of the book, there are a few pages explaining how to collect railroad art, which I found very informative. An easy read and very entertaining. An excellent coffee-table book.

Sentimental Journey
As always, Chronicle Books beautiful graphic series has captured a wonderful look back at riding the rails. Johnson and O'Leary have compiled a romantic collection of railroad commercial art.

ARK
Published in Paperback by University of New Mexico Press (June, 1996)
Author: Ronald Johnson
Average review score:

I wait years for this
I read the first parts years ago and always wondered where it would go, and it's so awesome to see it one piece. This is a true gem of modern literature.

One of the greatest long poems of the century.
Ronald Johnson, who died in March of 1998, worked over twenty years on his epic-length cosmological poem ARK. It was worth the wait--for those who love long poems like Pound's Cantos, Williams's Paterson, Olson's Maximus, or Zukofsky's "A", ARK will take a place among these great monuments. For those whose tastes run to more traditional works like Merrill's Changing Light at Sandover, ARK will delight and astonish through its ongoing exploration of science, spirituality, and the poetic quest. I've been reading this poem in bits and pieces for fifteen years now, and I am delighted finally to see it collected in a single volume.

Array Signal Processing: Concepts and Techniques
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall PTR (01 February, 1993)
Authors: Don H. Johnson, Dan E. Dudgeon, and Dan E. Dugeon
Average review score:

Reprint this book!
I used this book for an Array Signal Processing course. The book was very easily understood and complemented the professors coverage very nicely. I have read additional sections of the book and continue to be impressed with its readability and thorough coverage. Unfortunately I had to go through the Prentice-Hall print on demand service to get a compy of the text. paperbacks don't last as long and the price was still fairly high.

Classic textbook on array signal processing
Array signal processing is a fairly new topic in communications and signal processing. This textbook provides broad and deep coverage on this attractive field. Well-written and highly readable makes this book an invaluable resource for both students and engineers. Since only the basic materials can be found in this book, you may need to find newly published papers/books to see the latest development on this field.
